Great shots, Ron. I love BIF.

Cheers - Klaus

Great shots. My hummingbird feeder is on the way from Amazon. It should arrive early next week. Can't wait to capture these little birdies.

Hi RonakG,

Just to give you more to look forward to. This is a female Rufous taken with a K-5 + DA*300mm f4 in 2012.

Those are really nice. I liked #1 in the 2012 set the most, looks like it is posing for you with the tail feathers nicely spread out in a fan and all.

Thanks for sharing.

Will have to try CIF as I have not had any luck with AF-C or any other kind of pre-focusing method, they flit about so fast.

Cheers,

Abhijit

Nice series again Ron.

You have many species compared to here in Montreal, we only have 1 specy (Ruby-throated hummingbird).

Thanks for sharing.

Thank you Abhijit. I really like that one also.

Yes, you should give CIF a try. It is the only way I will ever try catching these little critters in flight. I ready the camera and then set it up on a tripod. After that, all the work is done by the camera while I just sit back and take life easy. :-)

Cheers.

Nice Ron. Those black-chinned are pretty cool. Your more recent post as well - for some reason I was forgetting that the black throat area also has the purple iridescence in it.

Thanks Ron. I'm a fan of your hummingbird images. I don't have a very good long lens, only the humble 55-300. I'm still hopeful about my adventure with hummingbirds.

In order to do catch-in-focusing with the DA 55-300mm you will need to put a peice of tape on the Data pin (the very bottom pin as you are looking into the camera. Then to manuall pre-focus the lens you will need to press in the lens lock button and focus the lens to where you think the future hummingbird is going to be. If your lens is a Quick Shift lens then you will not need to press the lens lock button to manually pre-focus. Then with the camera in AF-S, the Auto Power Off set to OFF, Continuous shooting set to Hi, and a wired remote pressed and locked, you just sit back and wait until a hummer enters the pre-focused area. Hopefully the shutter will be triggered and you will get an image. Each time a hummer enters the pre-focused area you will get a shutter trigger. You don't even have to be present for the camera to do it's work.

Cheers.

Wow. Thanks for the steps. I've bookmarked it. Mine is DA L version that came with my K-x as kit. I don't have a remote or tripod either. I'll be trying handheld shots first with some help from the on board flash. I know I'm not equipped to get into this area, but I'm counting on my luck to compensate for lack of equipment.

Fingers crossed :).

I made a little mistake. You DO NOT tape the Data pin. You short out the Data pin with a peice of aluminum foil so that it appears to be a manual focus lens.

Here is some info for you to use with your K-x.

Repost of some catch-in-focus info.

Cheers.
