NEX-3n -- shipping back right away!

;-)

Famous Moore's law is stating that every new release is only slightly worse than the previous

Oh boy I was hoping this was a joke but sadly he is actually serious about it...I am speechless....

Generally I do the same, but it is not my first NEX and I did not suspect Sony can make such cheap tricks to their customers.

More: leading mail order houses never suggest buying a charger separately. It adds to confusion.

I just received the NEX-3n.

Sony does not provide a spare battery charger for a $500 camera.

Do they expect, I would buy another NEX 3 unit to have the first one in opertion?!

:-((
You are sending it back because they did not provide you a battery charger........which you can get on Ebay or Amazon for about $20, and they would probably throw in another battery as well?

Why don't you just use your smart phone then?

Jesus, the excuses for returns are getting more and more ridiculous.

I agree, no battery charger is pretty lame. However, not bad enough to return an entire system.

Jeez!

This is getting sillier with every post. Just read the specs before you buy. And nobody really cares here if you never buy any Sony product ever again, so stop complaining, it's not a kindergarten.

If the vendor of such a "great camera" turns their back to me right after opening the box, I may expect even more unadvertised shortcuts embedded into the design of the device.

There is no second chance for the first impression.

Realistically, if Sony were to provide a charger with every camera sold as in the good old days, the total cost to them might be $20 extra; no more. Their accountants must have a chart which shows them that 20/500= 2% extra cost might result in (let's say) 3% loss in sales due to very competitive market conditions. So they drop the item and give you a charging cord instead.

But...what is the % loss in business for Sony due to the resulting bad-will ?

I do not see at the Sony web site any list of the generic chargers which would not void warranty of the battery if damaged .

Sony "genuine" charger cost $59.99 before taxes.

It is the amount you need to add to the real price of the newest NEX 3 .
I've seen that reference before, but in reality, can a generic charger really damage a battery?

"Go elsewhere " - that what Sony is suggesting.

I am following their advise.

You can go elsewhere--your prerogative for sure. However, I doubt you'll do better with your $$, even if you get 2 chargers thrown in on your next camera deal. :) I just bought a F3 NEX, and was delighted with the price. The camera does amazing things and does minimal damage to your credit card.

I've bought several APS-C DSLRs and a Full Frame DSLR, all of which were accompanied with a charger--but I still need to go out and buy new chargers because I'm often in remote areas for extended periods of time and have to rely on my car to charge batteries. The OEM chargers are usually AC, so they are useless to me.

Sending back a camera this good for a $10 charger will not make sense once you settle back down. Get over it, the sooner the better because then you can shoot with it--it's medicative to shoot. Best

In the past I've always ending up buying a 3rd party charger so I can charge in the car anyway.

The USB charging is a pain for spare batteries but useful because I always have a way to charge as I always have a micro usb lead

Either send it back or don't, it is what it is!

They also stiff NEX-6 buyers. Personally, I think they are being chincy.

Don't know about the 3, but with the 6 we got a USB power adapter. But you still have to charge the battery IN-CAMERA. To me, if they can supply a USB power adapter, why not just substitute a genuine (external) battery charger. How much extra could it possibly cost Sony?

And no printed manual.

Sigh... :-(

I much prefer the USB charging. So convenient and universal. I have usb chargers all over the house for my cellphones, so now can charge cams anywhere also. None of that "oh s**t where's the charger gone?" after a few months of non-use (as I have had in the past with other cams). AND I can do away with having a drawer full of proprietary chargers for 101 different batteries/devices.

Thank you Sony!

On the other hand, I prefer separate chargers myself. I find them handy for charging one battery whilst still using the camera with the other one in it, rather than having to tie up the camera for charging duties. Plus, I'm happier plugging in a charger to our sometimes-unstable mains electric supply (it shouldn't be, but sometimes is, despite surge protectors) than a camera - it's cheaper to replace (and less likely to be bothered by anything in the first place). Also saves the worry of physical damage if somebody accidentally yanks the cable and pulls the item being charged off whatever it's standing on for safety. Or treads on it, if it's already on the floor to avoid the risk of that!! Yes, I'm probably a bit OCD I know, but still...

Swings and roundabouts, as they say. Some prefer one solution, some the other. As I have a charger from an earlier NEX, I do have a choice, at least - which wasn't the case before they introduced the in-camera charging facility... I notice that Samsung have done this with their new NX300 too - though the problem there is that it has a new battery with no separate charger yet easily available for it.

It's OK that Sony doesn't supply an external charger. You can charge your battery in-camera via USB.

And hey, you can always buy a cheap Made In China external charger, if you're OK with that.

However if you want a SONY external charger for charging your Sony batteries, then Sony will gladly charge(sorry) you 65 EUR (which is 13% of the current price of the 3N!) for something that probably doesn't cost more than 6 EUR to produce.

It's OK to lower a products price for not providing a certain feature. But I think it's not OK to charge(sorry) customers who do want that feature at 10 times the original cost. It sounds like overcharging(sorry) to me, and not very respectful towards customers who were kind enough to buy one of Sony's product.

I was surprised at first too, but then I though charging with the body allowed to travel even lighter without one more brand specific charger to pack in my bag.

I'm now conviced it's better this way, more cheaper, more ecological, more travel friendly.

I don't need the charger for my daily usage and if I really were a heavy shooter, I would buy a chinese charger.

I remember well the complaints about Sony with the 5N:

What? No in-camera usb charging? What where they thinking?

Now that they have dropped the external charger and allow you to either charge through

USB or wall-plugin, some complain how Sony makes their camera worse and worse....

Remember, this allows you to skip on carrying a separate charger at all and you can re-use for example your 12V-5V car charging adapter from your phone/navi etc....

So I disagree: DPR sometimes IS a kindergarten!

As a side note, Sony AGAIN provided a firmware update adding new camera features for free for the 5N, as they previously did for the 5 and 3.

You want to complain? Go ahead, nobody is going to stop you, but also nobody is going to take you seriously either :-)

That is the thing, 90% of the target market will likely prefer in camera charging. I like to keep a spare battery sitting in the charger so I can swap out and charge the other one. I will just keep the charger from my 3. I am going to invest in some USB charging electrical receptacles in my house so I can plug my devices in, since everything charges that way.

What I wish Sony did for the 6 was maybe include a charger since it is a much more expensive camera. Or certainly for the 7 replacement.
