Hi, this is certainly a beginners question. I have a 50mm prime lens on my Pentax DSLR. So does a 50mm on this camera equates to 75/80mm ? Can I enter this challenge with this lens?

Okay, just realised this challenge has ended, sorry.

What would the answer have been ?

I think your question was a good one. To me, the challenge host did not make this clear. I simply chose to not enter.

The Challenge Title states: Prime Lens - Focal Length Equal Human Eye

(This obviously means the lens supplied on the camera).

Intro states: "Show me your very best picture using a prime length equal to human eye (43 mm AFAIK). A normal prime lens was usually 40-55mm on "full frame" SLRs - in practice, it was most commonly 50mm supplied as a "kit" lens."

(This further explains the focal length of what was meant by the prime lens).

And additionally there is a rule which states:
  • Needs to be a prime lens, zoom lenses are not welcome this time.
Again, it is visible that the prime lens meant here was to be of unchangeable focal length, although some cameras are supplied with zoom lenses. So it seems pretty clear to me...

That's why I did not enter this one; I don't have any prime lenses any more. :)

The way I understood it, what was meant was (approximate) 50mm / format-135-equivalent, which would, of course, vary from one sensor size to another.

Then again, maybe I got it wrong, as you say.

Maybe the hosts would kindly explain. Some challenges can dwell in slightly larger grey areas. :)

You are right, it equates to a 75/80 when compared to field of view with a full frame camera.

There were two recent prime challenges. From what you have written, I think you were looking at 'Prime Lens - Focal Length Equal Human Eye 2/2'.

In 1 of 2, the host wanted pictures taken with lenses that would equal the field of view with a 50mm on a FF camera. You would have needed a 28 or 35mm lens.

In 2 of 2, the host wanted pictures taken with a 50mm lens. Regardless of sensor size. This was explained in comments, but not really in the rules section. Images taken with a 35mm lens were disqualified. You would have used your 50mm lens.
