Hi guys

Today I had a photoshoot with two of my friends. They are going to start a new beachvolley-team. And I took photos for them because they are looking for sponsors. And this was the result. Any comment or critic is welcome!

All photos were taken with the D7000 with a 50 f1.8 and a SB700.

Thanks for looking!

2&3, a reflector would have helped to brighten up the eyes. The background is not the best, especially in 2&4. Also, I don't care for the OOF ball in the foreground. It's an integral part of the shot and basically what the shoot is about, and should be in focus. I do like the poses.

Pretty good. I would try to lighten up underneath the eyes. The background is distracting. It's good you made the volleyball part of the scene in #7, but because it's blurry, it detracts from the photo. I would consider using a wider angle lens for it, get closer, use a smaller aperture to get more in focus. For number #7 you might also consider getting lower or higher to use a less conventional angle. You might consider different angles for most of the action shots to get a more dynamic look to the images. They'll look less posed. Have fun!

Thanks a lot for your comment. The thing about the eyes, is indeed something I need to watch next time.

What would you chose as background? and for the shot with the ball, in #7, I should have used a smaller aperture, but don't you think it will still detract from the photo?

Thanks a lot for your comments, it really helps me!

I shoot a lot of beach volleyball. But I think it's a lot warmer here than where you are.

Nothing about your pictures tells me it's beach. I want to see players in jams, and water in the background.

And, some action. Get a couple people to fake sets at the net, and shag balls, so you can get some spikes. Fake some digs.

My opinion -- best pictures at just when the player hits the ball, and the ball is deformed from the hit. Use your top frame-rate for this.

And, get a sunny day where you can get some higher shutter speeds.

The weather here is indeed not good at all :-) We are still waiting for some real sunshine and a warm day. That's why I tried to use a warmer whitebalance.

About the action shots, it was mainly the goal to present the players. Not as much to show their volleyball features. When they really start playing tournaments I definately try to shoot a lot more action shots!!

Thanks alot for the tips!

For me, the biggest problem is the background. It is distracting and doesn't say "beach volleyball" to me at all. I do like some of the poses and the motion blur in the "action" shot works well. Try shooting from a lower angle- that will help get rid of the background better and it helps make athletes look larger and more impressive.

Where i am, sponsors want to sponsor the top players. 1) so that people are interested in what they do; and 2) so their name frequently show up in the results and 3) so that the sponsored players (wearing the sponsors logo) are in the semi-finals / playoffs.

Dramatic action shots show potential sponsors that your guys are good and people will notice them.

Also, most of the players I know put together a short book -- 6-8 page pdf with pictures, background and description of what they've done and won.

I was expecting to see some very fit and pretty women wearing scanty beach volleyball outfits.
Then you were clearly disappointed.....

They are just starting out and wanted just some pictures to present themselfes. The 6-8 page pdf is what they are making right now and that is what they will give to potential sponsors.
