Problems copying photos from laptop to desktop

I took my son's laptop with me on vacation and downloaded the photos from my 707 to the laptop using a USB cable that came with the camera. This worked fine. Now I am home and want to transfer the photos from the laptop to my desktop. I thought I could do this with a USB cable, but I have two different cables and neither one has the correct "ends". Can I simply buy another cable with the correct "ends" and then transfer my photos?

My son thought he would just burn the photos on to a couple CD's and he did that and brought them over tonight. His CD drive accepted them, but my CD drive wouldn't accept them. Actually I have a DVD that is 2x which I believe is about 16x or 20x in CD terms. My DVD plays CD's OK and my sons have even burned some CD's for me and they worked (not photos and he has a brand new computer with a different CD burner). My son is going to try again with the CD's although he may use a different burner (I don't really know what he plans to try). I wondered if anyone had any ideas as to what the problem might be.

Thanks

I know that my old CD burner on the Win98 PC says you can burn CDs that it can read, but other PCs can't or I can use the software where all CDs players can read the CDs. Doing that I can read them on this XP PC. It takes longer to burn and maybe that's why he didn't try it?

Good luck!

I am 99% sure that a USB to USB connection will not work between two computers. There is something like a 'master' and 'slave' relationship, where the PC is the master, and things like drives and keyboards are the slave (This is not the correct terminology, but I hope you get the point.) If you could borrow a USB drive from someone, you could transfer to the drive and then off onto the desktop.

If both computers have ethernet connectors, I would recommend that you purchase a crossover ethernet cable and hook the two up in a mini-netrwork. Any computer store would carry them. This transfers very fast.

It is hard to diagnose what is going on w/the CDs without more information
..... Windows machines or Macs ?

... Does the burning software give you different options on drive format ? .. if so, what format is he using ?

Some drives are more or less better at burning/reading certain brands of CD-R disks. Are you always using the same brand, or gave you tried different brands ?

Have you tried reading any other disks burned on that burner to see if you can read ANY disks, or is the problem limited to these disks w/images ?

I'm sure that someone here will be able to assist you in this.

P.S.

Sorry. You did say that you could read other disks. That would make me zero in on what settings he is using to burn the image disks... different from others that you CAN read ?

Is it possible that he wrote either (a) CD-RW which maybe can't be read on your machine, or (b) a DirectCD (UDF format) which hadn't been 'closed' yet?

You could also just copy the images back to memory stick & upload them to your computer (both via USB). Good luck.

Hi Richard,

The CDR issue, you may need a compatibility driver to read the CDRs. Here’s a CDR QA http://www.cdrfaq.org/faq04.html#S4-21 scroll down to Subject: [4-21] I can't read an ISO-finalized packet-written disc, this may help.

With me, I needed a UDF Reader to read the UDF formats like the direct-CD/Roxio, mentioned in the above QA.

For the UDF reader http://www.roxio.com/en/support/roxio_support/ecdc/ecdc_software_updatesv4.jhtml scroll all the way down the page to UDF Volume Reader. File name udfread_v5.1.1.213_inst.exe (540K) Oh , this is for windows. Roxio also has the Mac too.

Hope this helps.

Also windows 98 and-up, is supposed to support a USB direct connect between Laptop/Desktop. So I heard.

Richard:

I'm assuming you don't have a home network, where you have two or more computers connected by a hub or router. If you did, you could do a NetBIOS transfer.

One more thing you can do, but it will take forever and a day: E-mail the shots to yourself. More than two full-shots, forget it.

Hi ****,

here is a straitforward solution. Some other may work no worse. Use a memory stick as an interim. It does not matter if you put it in the F707 or a reader. Here's how to.

1. Transfer all of your data (not necessarily just pictures, anything!) from the laptop to a MS (128M is the desirable capacity).
2. Transfer this data from the MS to the desktop.
3. Clear up the MS and repeat until done.
Some notes:

N1. As soon as the camera does not read for viewing that data, it does not matter what type of data it is.

N2. To minimize the quantity of transfers, it makes sense to compress the original video files, all within their directory structure, in chunks of, say, 120 megs (any zipping program can do it).

N3. When clearing the contents of the memory stick for the next transfer, erase everything but hidden read-only file MEMSTICK.IND on it. If you do, however, it's no a big deal: in-camera format at the end will fix the "FORMAT ERROR" issue.
N4. Do NOT format a memory stick by PC.
Hope this helps.

As for reading writable or rewritable CD-ROMs by different drives... The rule of the thumb: newer CD recorders are able to read such CD-ROMs in about 100% of the cases. Not newer ones and not R/RW ones usually can read those far not in 100% of the cases (I know from own experience). You want 100% - get a CDRW in place of your drive.

It's nice to know about the memory stick method since it would be very simple and I hadn't thought of memory sticks in that way as not simply a storage device in your camera, but more versatile transfer devices.

My son has his computers networked, and the first thing he did was to check, but unfortunately I do not have a network card. I may possibly get one in the future, but don't know anything about price etc at this point.

All of the info on CDs was very interesting. I will give it to my son and he will probably get it working. It would be nice to use CDs in the future for various purposes (e.g. taking pix to Sam's or Walmart for printing.

My computer is four years old and there is a question whether I should buy a new one, update my old one, or simply use my son's computers for those features that I lack ( he lives only 3 miles away). The features that might be nice to have are the Windows XP operating system, more RAM, a CD burner, and possibly a network card. It would also be nice to have a faster clock speed (mine is about 340 MHz). I may be able to delay any action until spring as I probably won't be taking a huge amount of pictures this winter. The computers will only get better.

Again, thanks for your generous help.
