Excellent stills but awful video
This camera is capable of taking sharp, colourful and high standard images. The lens/on-off twist and pull mechanism is fine by itself but there are major design problems on its use for zoom which is entirely mechanical. But more on that in the "problems" section.
The ergonomics are good once you've got used to the unique on/off mode which is absolutely fine and those who worry about it are being a bit fussy in my opinion. There are more than enough modes to choose from, including the conventional PASM modes in addition to EXR fuji proprietry mode which is a quick setting for pretty much guaranteed good IQ, and auto mode which is similar to nearly all compact single lens cameras and a scene mode which has a good variety of landscape, indoor and combined (two) pictures for better shadow depth (but no formal HDR) and of particularly good quality are several black and white modes which produce some impressively rich shots. All in all it is a fine camera for stills and very easy to set up and use. If you just want stills I recommend this camera for lightness, ease of use and very sharp, well balanced and colour rich images.
Video mode is frankly terrible. While there is image stabilization it is simply not stable enough for steady videos. Furthermore the mechanical zoom is NOT linear but stepped, so that a smooth video zoom is not possible. Each increment of zoom shows as a "jump". This is very poor design. Moreover the zoom ring creates a very loud noise that is extremely audible. Finally video auto exposure is not smooth and is stepped, making videos constantly jumpy in brightness. Auto focus in video mode is also very poor with focus perpetually "hunting".
