Hey Folks, I'm in line for the D7100 at B&H, but my eager anticipation has just been clouded by the realization that I've been working happily with an older version of Photoshop. CS4 plays nicely with RAW files from my D200 and D300, of course. I'm committed to shooting in RAW. Will I suddenly become incompatible? Will the D7100, in effect, be more expensive than I'd planned?

From all accounts, yes. Upgrade to CS6 for big bucks, or get Lightroom if you want to stay with ADobe for less. It does stink.

You can convert to DNG using a free DNG converter from Adobe. Then you can use a old version of Photoshop.

To get RAW support within Photoshop via ACR...yes, you'll have to upgrade. If you simply use ViewNX2 to go to Tiff, then no.

OK. Thanks. But it IS compatible with CS6 and Lightroom? I just looked into the teacher discount and that is probably doable.

I'll have to read up on that. Does it work seamlessly like a plug-in, or do you have to do "offline" conversion. If the latter, then hopefully it does batch conversion. Doesn't sound too bad, so I definitely feel batter about the situation.
DNG converter will do batch conversion OFFLINE but in the end you may end up with 2 sets of RAWs- .DNG and .NEF. I never delete my NEF files until I've completed my project so keeping the extra files was something to consider.

Also, will your PC/MAC be powerful enough to work the big files that come out of the D7100? I process on a few computers but my Macbook Air and Pro have been my go to machines for the last few months. Both of those machines have 4GB or 8GB of RAM and are choking on the 21mp files from my Canon 5D Mkii. Both of those computers handle the 12mp files from my D90 and D300 just fine so I guess I need to upgrade from my C2D Macs to the newer i5 or i7 machines. Thats another $1200.

Currently no. There is a D7100-compatible release candidate for Adobe Camera RAW that is available, but not finalized. I read about it on Nikonrumors of memory serves. So if you download the release candidate and have CS6 or a recent version of Lightroom, you probably won't have any issues.

Otherwise, you can use View NX 2 and convert to TIFF and import into older photoshops, though I'm sure it would be an unwanted step in your workflow.

i7 3700K OC'd, 16 GB RAM, GTX560, SSD, multiple data drives. Computers are my other hobby :)

Nikon Rumors updated their post to CORRECT an earlier link that said Adobe's current release candidate would convert D7100 raw files. NR says Adobe said the earlier listing (by Adobe) was a "mistake". I just checked at Adobe, and the D7100 is NO LONGER listed in the info about which cameras are supported.

So my understanding is that currently the only way to process Raw files from D7100 would be with Nikon's software. I tried the Adobe DNG converter and it does not work, you need the proper Adobe Raw engine for that also, and as stated that is not available yet.

So, we're saying that currently we CAN'T work with the D7100's RAW files on ANY PhotoShop, without extra steps. That will change, yes?

Yes - Adobe deliver updates regulary that include new camera models. I guess we will have a RC (release candidate) in a few weeks.
