I've had the Sony DSC-S50 for a few weeks now and I love it. It's my first digital
camera, though I've played around with some other d-cameras before. It's full
featured for a really good price. The photos are very clean and good quality. even
when using the "User is dumb as a brick so do everything automatically" mode. I
get good pictures under most lighting conditions in the automatic mode. And there
are lots of controls for the folks who like setting things manually.

I noticed that several people mentioned a hard to view LCD screen. I had this
same problem also, till I discovered that there also is an LCD brightness control on
the setup menu. Mine was set REALLY low so I brought it up to a bit under the
half way mark and now it is nice and bright.

A couple of other notes: You can force the camera to pre-focus/balance the
picture by partially depressing the shutter. Once the green dot stops flashing
the shutter will respond very quickly after being tripped. Normally I don't need
to do this, but when trying to take a picture of my 19 month old daughter I
might have only 1/4 second to see the perfect shot, and take it.

When in MPEG mode set to the higher resolution, for much better quality movies.
I love the fact that this camera allows sound with the MPEGs. We almost bought
a cheaper Sony that didn't have sound. That would have been a mistake!

I picked up a demo model with a 32MB memory stick, plus a spare battery for
$540 out the door (no sales tax in Oregon). But I'm getting a $50 rebate from
Sony and a $50 rebate from the store so my effective cost is $440! But I'll probably
put the rebate towards another memory stick, not that I've managed to even
begin to fill up the first one. I'd like to try some hi-res shots and they suck up
more memory.

Problems:

Still don't like the Sony menu system that's on all their cameras. It's functional, but
not as clean as it could be.

Wish it had an optical viewfinder, but I have taken shots with the LCD flipped backwards
in the off position and even they came out fine, though not framed as well as they
could have been.
