I've had the camera since December 1999, and it still does a great job for me. What's interesting is that it still competes with other cameras on the market (the Leica version of it). Great (and essential) with 3x optical zoom.
Somebody reported the fact that it starts by default in a mid-zoom range (equivalent of 49 mm) as a problem. However, I think this is an advantage as 49 mm is closest to what we see with our own eyes (no distortion). By turning it off and back on again, I can put it in this position, even though it is fully automatic.
Problems:
Unfortunately a few:
1. Lens cover is unreliable, and if it refuses to open there's no way you can fix that manually. Had to have mine repaired (appr. US$100 in costs).
2. SmartMedia unreliable sometimes ("Card error" comes up, even when the card is fine)
3. Focussing went wild for a few days not long ago, where I could only focus on things that were 2 cms away from the lens. Problem ressolved spontaneously a week later.
4. Often stopped working due to the humidity (in Malaysia).
5. Flash not very powerful (good within approx. 4 metres)
6. I would have liked to be able to be able to set shutter time and aperture manually, and also I would have liked a greater maximum shutter time (infinite for instance) for those night shots. Can't see why it shouldn't be possible for companies to implement that in even low-cost cameras.
