I tried the 3020 and the 4040 and have decided on the 4040. This is a bigger bang for your buck since the 4040 only costs $200 more. Low light performance is exceptional without flash. Image is not sharp enough in auto mode but I am happy with it when I turn sharpness setting to +3. Fine tuning control such as sharpness and contrast is extremely useful. Although you can do this on your PC, but I'll let the camera do this since it tunes the image before writing to jpeg/tiff file for the first time. Video clip capability is disappointing as it limits you to only 30 seconds of recording time regardless of card capacity. The LCD is bright but grainy compare to comparable models. You'll need to get a tube and a UV filter to protect the delicate stick-out lens. Overall it's a solidly built model with enough features to let you grow with experience.

Problems:

Using an adapter tube with a filter will give you a shadow at the lower left-hand corner of your image on flash shots unless you zoom in half way. It is a big battery eater. I only get about 75 shots with LCD on and half with flash before I need to recharge my fully charged 1600mAh NiMH set. There is no scene mode for novice user like me. If you absolutely need scene mode, look at the 3020.
