I am very, very pleased with my new A40. It exceeds the expectations I'd gained from the best of the reviews below. It's easy to use, the telephoto patch referred to by other reviewers worked a treat (it IS worth downloading this patch because the telephoto correction makes the camera all that it was intended to be - see http://www.canon.co.jp/Imaging/PSA40/PSA40_Adjustment-e.html - and don't be put off if at first sight it looks a bit complicated). I'll try to post some of my pictures in the near future because I'd really encourage those who don't easily make up their minds to take the plunge on this one. Magic. It goes with me everywhere.
