After thousands of pictures taken with my coolpix 950 in the past two years I found it time for an upgrade. Because I like the swivel design of the coolpix camera's I decided to choose the Coolpix 4500 as my second digicam. My first impression was very positive. The camera is relatively light, most features can be accessed in an easy way by buttons or the menu. The LCD display is very bright, (just a bit on the small side in comparison to the 950) also during bright daylight so that I never have to 'guess' what I am photographing. Battery life is very ok, I can take pictures all day long before the battery runs out, but to be safe I bought an extra battery pack.
Problems:
Problems:
1. The LCD display is on the wrong place. It's where I usually keep my thumb when I am holding the camera in my hand, so that I have fingerprints all over the LCD display. Doesn't look nice!
2. The LCD display shows an annoying green or white haze in the brightest areas of the LCD image during bright daylight conditions, even vertical 'hazy bars' when there is very much light in one area of the picture. Don't know if this is by design or a malfunction. Fortunately the haze doesn't show on the pictures but it makes it harder to see what I am photographing when the haze on the display blurs the preview of the picture I want to take, especially because I take most pictures outside.
3. The CCD of my camera has dead pixels!!! On dark conditions they are visible as a few bright white dots on the same place on every picture I take and I can even see them on the LCD display.
Conclusion: I can live with the strange haze on the LCD display, but if a camera has dead pixels it isn't good. This thing goes back where it came from! I think I will happily take pictures with my 950 again for a while.
