Coming from a film background, I't definitely time to get used to. I have had this camera for two weeks now and have used mostly program and aperture priority; even took my frist movie.
I'm very impressed by this camera; my first digital, so I have nothing to compare with it, but the images are better than I thought they would be.
I shoot in fine mode, as tiffs are just to big. Jpeg fine I can fit 133 images in a 356 mb flash card. Or 20 in tiff mode. I'm excited enought to get a few more lenses.
Remember it will take time to learn; for the beginner, it will take more.
I like having so many options; but find I don't like to use to many; just keep it simple is what I like; the rest I work in photoshop. I find if I get the exposure right I don't have to do so much with the image.
I love the compact size; but find you need at least a monopod a lot of the times, as it's so small my hands cause vibration. But the size sure beats carring so many lenses and camera bodies. 4500 lenses are so much cheaper, wow!
I went with the 4500 mostly because of the size and macro quality.
Love the zoom magnification on playback to check sharpness of image.
Like the delete for images you don't want.
Other cameras I liked; Sony s S85; Leica digilux 1. Opted for the Nikon mostly because of macro and add on lenses.
The forums here helped me a lot; thanks everyone. Jon008
Problems:
I find that the LCD is tough to get used to if your from a film background. Wish they could make the viewfinder TTL like film; my main wish!
The images tend to over saturate in red colors, an easy fix in photoshop.
Flash distance needs improvement.
Lock on the diopter would be nice too.
Need a longer powered battery?
Major problem when knowing if I got the image or not; as the camera is sometime slow in recording image. When I think I've got the shot, I have to reshoot, because it was a second to slow. I miss the click of the film cameras to know exactly when the shutter fired.
I think Nikon needs to keep the menu's down; as there can be so many it becomes ridiculous and overwhelming to use.
I liked what one fella mentioned; sequencing your own menu order; that would be great. Overall, I wish it was simpler.
Faster lens is also would be a big improvement; there are many lenses that are 1.8 or 2.0 that are much better for low light. I almost didn't purchase the 4500 for this reason. I think because of the small size of the 4500 it was sacrificed. I would prefer a faster lens Nikon!
Also a major disappointment is no Raw format. What happened Nikon? Shutter priority is a joke; every picture I take is to dark?
Still don't understand Program with the asterisk?
I won't buy another camera again until the Fovieon becomes available.
Tripod won't allow you to swivel the camera. Need an add on to work.
No low light focus assist, for focusing; major let down for Nikon.
