I got an excellent deal on my S45 here in Japan paying about 52,000 yen ($425.00 US) before tax. I am a total beginner to digital photography so it's slow going while I'm learning. I only gave the camera a 4.5 for Ease of Use because it has so many controls in manual mode that will take some learning for the beginner. The auto mode seems to produce clear quality pictures in most settings for me though. Part of my problem is that having purchased the camera here in Japan it came with only Japanese language manuals of course. I am eagerly awaiting Canon's preparation for download of the English-language version of the manuals and in the meantime learning what I can from the information posted at: http://www.canon.co.jp/Imaging/PSS45/index-e.html
The camera is compact and solid. It fits nicely into the hands and the LCD is clear and quite sharp quality. The movies surprised me quite a bit. They are very smooth and good quality and the small built-in mike picks up all voices in the room. The movies can also be reviewed right in the camera just like the pictures. The menus are easy to navigate and even though I have large fingers I've had no problems at all with the 4-way switch so many complain about.
Well that's enough of my non-technical reviewing. I have much to learn and I'm looking forward to doing so with this wonderful camera. I love it and can't recommend it highly enough.
