After I've read several reviews on this site I decided to go for
an 'oldie', the Pro 90 IS from Canon. Since I don't really care
about the 'pixel-hype' I 've chosen for a camera with
incredable features but less pixels.
You actually can compare this camera to the Dimage 7i and
the Nikon Coolpix 5700, and I did. Concidering the fact that
the Pro 90 now costed about 55% of it's previeus price, I
guess it's a steal !
I 've used a full-automatic SLR for 7 years before buying
digital now, and this Canon had the same look and feel as
my 'old' SLR, a Olympus IS 100 S.
I'm really shocked to see that the pictures I take with my
digi-cam are simply as good or better than the film pictures.
So my opinion is that this camera isn't for pro's, but for
people like me who enjoy a full-automatic.
I'm really happy !
The 16 meg Compact flash card included gives me 17 pics,
I can live with that untill I 've enough money to buy the 128
meg.
You don't need a CF card reader because the camera can
be connected directly to my Mac through USB.

Update May 1st 2006:

Meanwhile I'm using the camera for more then 4 years. I've got some
issues with it, like poor focusing with low light, but it's overall the best
camera I could 've bought at the time !

Even today I often get people asking me wich type it is, 'cause they
wanna buy the same one. It's obvious that, due to the fantastic lens,
it keeps on taking the greatest pictures. Dispite it's only 2.6 milj. pixels,
it's still much better then all of the 5+ milj. pixel mid-price digicams on
the marked today. One thing I don't understand is the complaints I
read about poor battery live... I use two batteries and never get into
trouble. You can easily go all day with one battery and still have
enough to upload you're pictures.

Gotta add that I use a 128 meg CF card. When I used a borrowed 512
meg, battery live was much less. It seems to have an issue with bigger
memory cards.

My biggest worry today is what I'm gonna do, once it gets broken.
There is no, decent priced, substitude for the Canon Pro 90 IS on the
market today.

Problems:

Due to long closet-time at the dealer, the battery was dead.
Immediatly got a new one.
To bad there's no soft-case with it, but there's no with others
eather.

Update May 1st 2006:

I've got some issues with it, like poor focusing with low light,
overexposure when used with the build-in flash and some lack of colour
that I adjust in photoshop.
But it's overall still the best camera I could 've bought at the time !
