The camera takes great pictures out of the box. I've taken about 3000 pictures. I am a previous owner of the KODAK DC290 and definetly the NIKON 5000 has a greater learning curve as you can control all the aspect of taking a picture. The camera struggles taking picture where there is a lot of sun light behind the object or dim light (interior) in a room. It is a challenge to point and shoot when the previous settings exist. One has to manually control the lights, ISO, aperture and shutter speed to successfully get a good picture. Overall you will have to be committed in learning the camera and experiencing different lighting situations so you can get great pictures. I've been taking picture of this camera since the birth of my son. I've struggled with it but in general I've been successful in taking great shots. I love the 360 degree viewscreen. Problems:
-Difficult taking picture indoor or when object is behind bright light
-Sometimes bluriness happens when you move camera too early or when subject moves.
-I had to buy another battery.
-I had to upgrade the firmware a couple of times and nikon has their website password protected. (easy to do but inconvenient as one has to create an account)
