Really disappointed. I was torn between the G3 and Sony 717. The sample pictures on Dpreview site swayed me to the Sony - nothing to beat it (in my opinion) and picture quality is what it is mostly about? I decided, however on the Canon as I already own a Pro 90 and the G3 is an update of this model using the same battery etc. And all those glowing reports by reviewers and users! The G3 is lovely to use, having nice light controls and a miriad of features - mostly useful, like the ND filter and instant switch from record to play. (The Pro 90 is something of a pig to use - tacky and poorly-placed control knobs being among the worst. But the big stabilised lens and colour evf make up for most of its failings, like its 2.6 meg output.) The G3 feels plasticy and fragile in comparison. But the results I got from the G3 were sadly disappointing - even though I used it at 50 iso and max resolution and superfine compression, the pictures were very grainy, noisy and veiled, nothing even near to the quality expected from a 4meg modern so-called top camera. To top it all, the camera packed in after a few days use. I have just replaced it with the Sony 717, now available at realistic price. I hope to have a happier story to tell about my first Sony Digicam.

Problems:

The camera corrupted three of my big CF cards, refused to switch off, and generally had a mind of its own. It would seem that I am one of the unlucky ones, but I would still bring the Pro 90 on an important shoot - at least I would be reasonably sure of getting some useable pictures.
