I evaluated the Sony DSC-V1, F717, Cannon G3, G5, Olympus C-5050, Nikon 5400, 5700. I chose this camera for its "feel" to use, its 8x optical zoom, non-proprietary memory and quality of images. After using the 5700 for a couple of days I am amazed by the quality of the images. My first digital was the Olympus C2000 2.1MP and you can really notice the difference at 5MP. I am more than happy with this camera and it should last me a good 3 years. My advice for selecting you chosen camera is pick all the ones you want to "evaluate" then go and try them out as I found many of the latest "stars" such as the DSC-V1, C5 and 5400 were actually not that nice to hold and use. The 5700 feels great and does the job very well.

Problems:

The focus "problem" that many people mention is not as extreame as you would think. Yes, in some lights it can have trouble, but you can correct it pretty quickly and it does a great job.

Takes a while to get used to all the buttons - could have been laid out slightly better, but it is not a problem once used to them (as with any device).
