As I was going to buy my first digital camera, I spent hours scanning the net for info. I read a lot of reviews (with my mind set on a Nikon digicam) and almost settled for the 5700. However, Nikon released the 5400 just in time, so I went for that one instead. Now, after some three weeks playing with it, this is what I've concluded:

1. The camera is very easy to use. This could be since I've knew most of the menus from reading on the Internet, but anyway - I've hardly used the manual at all.
2. It'll take good pictures, given that the photographer tells the camera what to do.
3. It's neatly designed. Despite me having quite big hands, I love the rubber-coated grip. Build quality is high too - it feels sturdy since it's made of magnesium alloy
4. It has problems in dim light. However, I figure most digicams have, if they don't have an AF-assist.
5. You can't erase images while they are being written to the card. You have to enter quick review mode and then delete them. Also, you can't change the time the pictures are displayed after taking the shot. However, these issues could be fixed by Nikon in a formware upgrade...
6. Manual focus is a little tricky.
7. LCD Display is very good. Visible in direct sunlight, and very high resolution. A little small, but one gets used to it.
8. No status LCD window... But I tend to use the big LCD as viewfinder anyway.
9. Wonderful 28mm lens.
10. Optical viewfinder is bad. You only get about 78-80% of the frame... But I tend to use the LCD anyway.

All in all, the camera is definitly on the plus side. A little pricey, but otherwise worth the money.

Problems:

Focus problems in dim light... But as I said, most digicams seem to have trouble with this issue.
