The 4.5 for the image quality is for the occasional purple fringing. Not a big deal. Otherwise, it's image quality is much better than average.
I tried several cameras and can say that Canon makes the best compact cameras to date. A80 is the perfect combination of easiness, fastness and creativness in a small body.
Forget HP, Kodak, Olympus, Casio or even Minolta and Fuji. None of them has the same detailed, noise-free and high quality image as Canon has. Believe me. I won't by anything but Canon in the future if the image quality doesn't improve on other cameras.
There is Sony with it's sharp images but in low-light...forget it. V1 is an exception of course (we are talking about compact cameras!).
I think Canon A80 is the best choice now to get for everyone in the market looking for a relatively cheap and high quality compact camera. No doubt, this is a quality product that has everything that an average person needs. Highlights include noise-free images, powerful flash for the size, detailed images and fastness.
This camera is not a starter digicam, who says that is wrong. For a starter one there is the A60.
A80 is a camera for everyone.
