like everyone else (whether they are going to admit it or not), i willingly paid the price of admission for this camera, fully knowing its limitations. canon did what they had to do to attract us into this camera, and now i fully expect to upgrade to a more functional unit one day...maybe. i miss some of the features of the g series, mainly the focus/meter mode configurability and the ability to use the lcd to compose odd angle shots. i certainly do not miss the goofy tunnel viewfinders on those cameras. all things considered, though, nothing even comes remotely close to the smooth, sharp, noise free images the cmos can produce. i look at the 300d as a modern day ae-1 and i remember way back when that camera hit the market, and all the comments it drew because it was made of plastic and didn't have a motor drive or interchangeable finders, etc. i think the 300d had an equal impact on slr photography, and everything else that comes after it will be trying to catch up. whether nikon can ever match canon, feature for feature, in a camera that can produce as good an image as this one will have to play out. i don't see anyone leaving a store with a d70 and a lens for $999 unless something changes, and it might.

Problems:

in the end the overall feel of the camera and the lack of the predominant features that i came to expect were too much to ignore. If these do not or might bother the prospective buyer, then more power to you. The other thing that I really never liked was the silver finish. In the end, I just felt like I was using something that was cheapened down to get me to want a more expensive model. I picked up a G5, and all the features I expect and use all the time were back. They'd be back, too, if I wanted to fork over the extra money for a 10D, but then it would not stop there, as the kit lens would not work on that camera. It all began to feel like a sham, and I was mad at myself for taking part. I sold my 300d to an eager friend. I fully expect to be back in an SLR at some point, but if I am going to pay the price for lugging all the extra gear around, it's going to something I really want and not a stop gap, which I feel this camera really is. The 10D is a wonderful unit, and if I go back to Canon for an SLR it would be my first choice.
I am not sure what I will do. D70? E1?
