This is my first digital camera that I bought 3 months ago. My first camera was an SLR, Nikon F55D, bought 2 years ago when I was about to go travelling. All along, my opinion is that the picture quality of a film camera is unsurpassed. Until now, I still think so. But, the convenience which a digital camera possesses persuaded me to buy one.
The 1st thing that I was looking for in a digital camera was the number of mega pixels it has, which I set at 5. Secondly, I wanted a camera which looked different from those normal-looking models. During the camera hunting period, I came across the DSC-F828. But, it looked a bit bulky, no doubt the F828 is an 8 MP camera. So, I started to find its predecessor, which was the F717, a tad lighter, but it had to be ordered, 'cos it was considered an old model. Luckily, no extra cost for that.
The F717 fitted my bill. After buying it, I started to take pictures with it, mostly buildings, flowers (macro), things like that. The picture quality is quite good. But sometimes the night shots are too blur, mainly because I don't have a tripod. One of the good things about it is that I can take pictures with just one hand. It feels ergonomical and has a good grip. Of course, it's better to hold with both hands. I especially like the swivelling feature of the camera. I always take pictures around waist level and above crowds when the need arises. Start up time is very fast, battery life is very long. However, I still got some features that I have to hands-on more.
All in all, this is a good & different camera and I'm glad that I bought it, although at S$1300.
Problems:
It would be good if the downward swivelling angle can be increased a bit. The upward angle is just nice.
The number of selections for SCN is also limited. Some other cameras in its class from other brands that I came across during my camera hunting possess a lot more scene selections than this camera does. Maybe Sony doesn't think it's necessary to have so many selections?
I experienced a mild electric shock when the camera is connected to the television. After that, I have not connected it to the tv. Anyone experienced this before? Does it happen with other cameras?
