Since publishing my original mini review, I have bought the 50-200mm lens and hve had the same experience as other reviewers - you really do need to team this lens with a tripod whereupon the results are very good.
I have been pushing the 14-54mm lens to its limits taking lots of "macro type" close ups and the results have been good although I really would like to have a bash with the 50mm macro lens.
I continue to be amazed by how good the automatic white balance is - even under the flourescent lights in my kitchen.
Battery life is excellent, the handling of the camera is just right and I can see myself keeping this outfit for a good long time. My previous camera was a Nikon D100 with which I never really gelled having been spoilt by the build quality and handling of the Nikon F100. The E1 comes close to the build quality of the F100.
Olympus, somehow you have got to get people buying the E1 and its 4/3rds derivatives. Your medium and low end cameras are very popular according to my local dealer but the E1 is not and he hasen't bothered to replace his E1 camera and accessories stock as I found out to my disappointment when I went in to the shop in the hopes of handling the macro lens.
Problems:
None with the camera (I think) but I can no longer persuade Olymus Viewer to talk to the camera for the purpose of firmware updating.
I find it very difficult to focus manually in the viewfinder maybe we can persuade Olympus to change the viewfinder screen to one with focusing aids (microprism and or split image) as on old fashioned manual focus slr's
