excellent manual controls, value, compact and sturdy.
I’ve been shooting pictures since 1966. I own and use cameras built back in the late seventies as well as a vintage 1950 4x5 speedgraphic: no batteries, no light meter, springs and glass. I also paint landscapes, which is about as manual a picture capturing technique as you can imagine.

I love film, but needed the instant response of a digital.

I studied the new 5 meg digitals for months and was very tempted by the canon digital rebel. However, with prices dropping every 6 months I finally decided that the canon g5 would be plenty camera for my needs. I’ve had it about 3 months now and am quite satisfied. Yes, I have seen the purple fringing but it is easily avoided with a slower shutter speed and smaller aperture. I’ve also noticed some minor problems focusing in low light, but can usually get the shot if I tinker. For an average all around camera, this is the best out there for the price. Costco:$540. There are picture samples on this page:

The top 6 pictures are all taken with the g5. The lens cover is cheesy, and I respect quality glass enough to be willing to put up with the lens cover adapter which I found online for $14 including a filter. Yes, it does get in the way of the glass rangefinder, but I use the flip out lcd, so no problem. The manual controls are quite extraordinary in their comprehensiveness. Also the ability of the camera to be controlled from my laptop is very, very handy. Take a picture, review it instantly large screen, then retake it if needed before the model leaves. The camera came from costco with a sandisc 256 compact flash card and I got quite a few “card error” messages. Finally I exchanged the sandisc for a lexmark and haven’t had any more card errors. I love the way this camera is compact and loaded with tricked out manual controls. The video is pretty cool too. It’s small enough that I can take it rock climbing and bike riding. It also fit’s inside the $40 large waterproof aquapac bag for kayaking..Awesome camera!

Problems:

slow to focus in low light and purple fringing in over bright lighting. Still, these problems are very minor and insignificant compared to the awesome, extremely sharp photos taken by a camera at this price range and with this feature set.
