I have owned this camera for approximately two months, and love the
construction and feel of it. It is nice to carry around a capable camera and not to
have to worry about rain/dust.
As for two of my pre-purchase concerns, noise and AF performance, I almost
forget that I had them. ISO 400 at sumoh wrestling delivered delighting pictures,
and only truly dissapointing occasion with AF was when testing countinuous
mode at a rainy school sports festival.
And for those with old (*fast*-unless you are gifted with a good eye-) lenses
lying around, do not forget mount adapters. Though slower ones turned out to
be useless, I was rather surprised to see the result from an old Pentax prime.
In the end, with the recent price drop, I consider E-1 as one of THE BEST
options around. Unless there is strong color/shape preference against it or
inclination toward sports photography etc., the camera is worth considering. It
actually inspired me to pick up my learning photography after years of absence.
Problems:
There have not been real problems, but I do have my wish list:
1. ability to magnify preview X10 instead of X4
2. harder focus mode switch lever - I have managed to knock it twice
3. ...pancake lens? (bulk is a real problem in crowded Tokyo subway lines)
And one warning for somebody with hands & muscle about my size & power...
Since images are so sharp, the camera is very unforgiving when it comes to
shaking. Hand-holding the camera with 50mm macro maybe fine, but 50
-200mm becomes a bit of challenge, and trying to set all the controls right at the
same time to get the beautiful results is TOUGH.
