I really expected Nikon to come up with something. This is really rediculous: This one and D50 should be answer on Canon 350D? NO WAY. 
I've been a bit afraid that I had have to wait a bit longer before I bought my 350D, but now I am completely glad I did so. There was really nothing to wait for. Friends have D70 and I think 350D is pretty similar in image quality and functions, but smaller, lighter, 8MPx and much cheaper - camera itself as well as lens and accessories.
