I upgraded from the F717 two years ago. I love the F828. Yes, it is not perfect and there are a few things that really annoy me about it. But, I have taken some incredible pictures so far. And they keep getting better as I learn more about the camera.
Here are the things I love about the camera...
Swivel lens to easily take ground shots or over-the-crowd-shots. This is a very useful feature and I am shocked that other cameras do not have this. This is one of the main reasons I prefer this camera. I was thinking about getting the Canon EOS20D but I don't want to have to use the view finder all the time. (Sometime you have no option-you must use the view screen because of the angle)
Nice zoom-very fast.
Lens built in. I don't want to carry a bunch of lenses with me. Since you never remove the lens the inside never gets dirty.
Shutter is too sensitive. I have prematurely pressed it many times. And, since the delay between shots is a second or so I lost the perfect moment to take the photo.
Love the ability to take videos. It comes in handy for many different purposes. It does not replace a dedicated video camera by any means but it is nice not to have to carry two cameras around.
Battery life is exemplary! I have never had to use the spare battery in two years!
Problems:
Here are some things I don't like...
A little too heavy and bulky
Too much of a delay between shots. Should be instant like the Canon EOS-20D. I've missed a lot of great shots because of this.
Memory sticks are waaaaaayyyy too expensive. Get real Sony! I wouldn't mind just using compact flash but you can't use the higher video setting unless you use a memory stick pro! Hmmm.....
Can't take pics while reviewing a photo.
Low light shots have to be with a tripod because any IS0 above 200 is unusable due to noise.
Would love aperture F2-F16. Only F2-F8 is limiting.
Viewfinder could be a higher resolution. Also, it should detect the eye automatically.
View screen should be bigger.
Self timer should be programmable. Not just ten seconds.
Flash should have lower settings. The lowest setting is too bright for a lot of situations.
Things I would like to see on the next version...
Lots of memory built in to buffer shots to eliminate delay. This will make RAW usable.
Even higher resolution. Perhaps 10 or 12 megapixels.
Allow higher quality video to be taken with Compact flash. I refuse to pay your prices for memory sticks! Sorry!
Faster autofocus would be nice. On many occasions I haven't had the luxury of my subjects holding still.
Image stabilizer for zoom shots.
