I got the Nikon D50 with the 18-55mm kit lens last week and am enjoying it. The body and lens are very light and small compared to the D70. The body fits perfectly in my hand and its easy to reach all controls while looking into the viewfinder.

The lens is very smooth. With this lens I am able to get real close to the subject (less than a feet). Also since it needs only 52mm filters.. you won't need to spend too much on them. (Larger sized filters can get quite expensive.)

Image quality is very good. I took all pictures in fine jpeg and am very happy with the results. I was able to get very shallow depth of field even with f5.6 because at 55mm it allowed me to get very close to the subject.

Problems:

In my kitchen light the auto white balance mode did not produce the appropriate correction. I had to manually set it to incandescance mode to get the desired result. Maybe its just a funky element in my light bulb.

The other problem was that I had difficulty installing the driver for this camera. I loaded the CD that came with the camera and did a custom install selecting everything. The installation failed saying that some functions of the driver are missing. I was running win 2000 pro on an IBM laptop. On examining the contents of the CD, I found that only D1 drivers were present. I am currently using a card reader to access the photos on the SD card. Need to contact Nikon tech support and resolve this issue.
