The manufacturer tells lie! The beauty's face in the official demo photos at http://panasonic.co.jp/pavc/global/lumix/popup/gallery/models/fz30/P1000305.JPG is leballed as taken at the farthest end, i.e. focal length 88.8mm (equivalent to 420mm in 35mm format) but according to its Exif record the focal length was 36.3mm (equivalent to 172mm in 35mm format). The picture quality at the farthest zoom end in fact is not so good. Please refer to those displayed in this site.
However this camera is still the best choice within its class in terms of quality, functions and performance. I do not repeat too much the good and true comments others have given.
Problems:
1. No stereo sound recording (comparing with Canon's S2 IS and Samsung's Pro 815),
2. Not using AA batteries (comparing with S2 IS and Fuji's S9000Z),
3. Its flip and twist LCD is vulnerable (comparing with Sony 828's strong construction to attain the same purpose).
