Very nice camera, bought it in june 05 and shot over 1000 pictures since.
Th 18-55 kit zoom is very efficient, not too much distorsion, very sharp, but a strong vigneting at wide angle length and maximum aperture. I like the automatic manual AF override.
I bought my first Pentax Spotmatic SLR in 1969, with 42mm screw mount Takumar 1,8-55, 3,5-28 and 2,5-135. all still working and I tried the 2,5-135 on the istDS: a great lens!
I also have a MV bought in1982, with Pentax 1,8-50 and 2,8-28. The 1,8-50 is very sharp on the istDS.
Also have a MZ50 with AF 28-80 3,5-5,6 and AF 100-300 4,5-6,3; both lenses are fully automatic and perform great on istDS;
Non A lenses can only be used in manual mode, but the istDS provides automatic exposure by selecting the right shutter speed when you press AE button and depth of field button together. It is like the semi-auto exposure on my old Spotmatic.
Using standard AA NiMH rechargeable batteries is very convenient and cheap.

Problems:

It is my first DSLR, and I find that dust on sensor is a real concern on such cameras.
I also have a Sony DSCV1 wich is my pocket carry on camera, and is very good too.
