After searching for months I finally found what I was looking for - the best point-and-shoot camera on the market.

I bought myself a Nikon D50 last fall and have been having a lot of fun with it - but I really needed to get a compact camera that I could carry around with me at all times. I spent a lot of time reearching different models and testing different makes out. After reading about the SD800 IS and playing with it at the store I was sold.

This camera has all the features that someone wanting a high quality point-and-shoot could possibly need. It has a very customizable manual function and the presets are great at taking a variety of pictures. Photo quality is solid and better than most other pns cameras I've played with.

At the end of the day - no - this is not a dslr and it will not give you that level of quality. But for what it is, it is by far fantastic.

Problems:

The only problems I have with the camera come into play in its construction which is why I gave it a lower mark there. I find that the door for the batter and the flap that covers av/out are both very flimsy and seem prone to breaking very easily. As a person with big fingers I'm a bit afraid of snapping them at some point. So one must be gentle with this... It's definitely not like my old Sony Cybershot that could be whipped open and slammed shut on a moments notice.

The other minor gripe I have is that the camera doesn't use double a's but rather its own lithium ion battery. I would rather be able to use rechargables as I think all pns cameras should. It makes them easier to have around all the time and for traveling. But I'll just pick up a spare battery or two for those occasions when I think I might need one. (At a higher cost then rechargables would be, however.)
