I had this camera for almost a year, and it was recently stolen at a party my sister took it to. Other than the fact that it was stolen, this was it's most valuable use... point and shoot at parties. And for the most part, I thought this camera was perfect.
Being made of all metal parts rather than plastic made it really durable. I updated from my Fuji S3000Z which when I bought was great, but way too chunky to take with me everywhere. The FX9 fits perfectly into even my smallest purses and I protected it in a mobile sock (mock). It went with me everywhere and took some stunning pictures of mostly people. It came with me to an Elton John and Muse concerts, and with a 512MB card I got stacks of photos and movies. Some people have complained of not being able to zoom while in movie mode, however i found it easier to set the zoom before recording. This still means you can't zoom in and out during the movie, but it did help. The sound quality was great especially at the concerts. I found the image quality was exceptional except for a few times at the pub where the flash hasn't been on and so then it tends to go reddish and blurry. The noise factor isn't even noticeable on the general "Party" setting which it was set to most of the time, unless I was to have enlarged the pictures (it was fine for 6x4s, 6x8s and other regular enlargements!).
The FX9 is really easy to use and for what I was using for, great value for money.
The OIS feature is also great for someone like myself who shakes quite noticably when having to do anything where i need to be still, like taking photos!
Now that I'm in the process of researching and looking for another camera, I am definitely sure I am going to stick with Panasonic... maybe and FX1???
Problems:
The only 2 problems I encountered with the FX9 were:
Pressing the 'button' to capture the photo. Sometimes, mostly when other people were using my camera they tended not to press and hold the button long enough, meaning that photos they thought they captured actually never were.
Secondly, the tendency for the camera on/off switch to get knocked and turn on in my bag happened several times. However the save battery feature which turned the camera automatically off if not in use saved my battery so many times! Not that battery life was a problem. I could normally get about 200 photos and plenty of minutes worth of movies on one battery charge...
Definitely recommended for those BEGINNER (this is not a good camera for professionals because of the lack of manual features) photographers and those who want a good point and shoot device!!!
