I bought this camera two week ago, and after some sessions of test i can say that the overall score is very good:
PRO
- Solid Construction, even if it's not sure that it's really made of metal like rod in reviews, i feel it like a plastic with a “metal effect”; it seems a brick, there is'nt parts that “cricks”
- It use Sd and not Xd card, I have placed in it one Sandisk Ultra II 2 giga
-8 megapixel, very useful for cropping and in order to reduce the noise (see the cons)
- fast 35mm 2,8 , many concurrent has openings from 3.5 or above
- Fast autofocus, altough when used in "high speed mode" the minimum focusing distance drop to 1 meter, the speed is incredible,no comparison with my old F602z: F40 is better, and a lot.
- Continuous fire Modality, I still don't haved tested it yet; the small engine emits a series of noises that they make me the creeps, seems gears from 1 millimeter.
- Screen luminous and large, even if not defined as I dreammed in spite of the 255,000 pixel; it seems that while used as view-finder the resolution is much lowest that when used to display photos.
- Excellent Colors, automatic balance of the white is very reliable, MUCH best of my F602z, practically the manual balance is useless.
- Indistinguishable ISO 100-400 if not to monitor to 100%, 800 usable ones, 1600 - 2000 very small solos for desperation photos.
- Automatic Exposure much effective
- Face detection, that I considered onec silly feature, much profit instead! I had not thought for the utility in timer self portraits!
- Exposure with flash most accurate, also with macro! with the F602z in modality macro i can't use flash. This is a point that has a lot astonished to me.
- Hard plastic that protects the screen, don't fold if pushed.
- The battery is recharged fastly, the 4 AA to 2500 mha of fuji the S602z us put 18 hours…, no cradle or other things like this, just a small charger.
-In poor light, really poor, a led is ignited to help fire, and in movie mode the light remains like a little torch!
- In underexposed photos (luminous sky and zones in shadow) are possible to recover two stop, decidedly remarkable, thanks to the good control of the noise.
AGAINST
-35-100 much less useful against the 28-100 of the contenders
- maximum opening 5,0 to 100mm: Bleargh.
- Digital Noise slightly worse of the F30,
- i think it's perhaps the worst defect: in default, and it's not modifiable, it is like if level 100 Unsharp 3 Mask pixel came applied; is'nt terrible, but i must downsize to 6 megapixel in order to practically obtain the photos of the F30: i say, an 8 megapixel but that in the facts they are like 6.
- If seen to 100% the photos have noise in the fine details also to Iso 100, but they are just mental tricks.
- Just a little of purple fringing, not too much
-It lacks a diaphragms and times Priorities.
-In night and fireworks mode, it's impossible to select Iso higher than 200: no way to select high Iso and shutter speed lower than 1/4s
Problems:
Movies a little jerky, but really good colors
no High Iso at slowest shutter speed
no scene mode that prefers closed aperture against fast speeds
