It's an amazing camera I love mine. Whether if you're considering a dslr for the first time, or a seasoned pro who's looking for an excellent quality backup--the D40 won't let you down. In fact the D40 will more than likely exceed your expectations.

I've been creating photographs for over 30 years & using digital cameras since 1996. Image quality is of foremost concern to me, out of the box the D40 delivers amazing quality images. It fits in my very large paws comfortably, so don't let it's size dissuade you. One thing I like very much about my D40 is, it's much lighter in weight, than my D80--which I gave to my daughter after I was satisfied checking out & testing the D40.

The smallest prints I usually make are 16"x20" or 20"x24"--the 6mp D40 is more than capable of helping me create the size prints my customers demand & that I expect.

Also, the kit lens is more than enough glass for most people's needs. The rumors of it being an inferior lens is pure hogwash. The clarity of the kit lens quite frankly astounded me & I'm glad it did-- otherwise I would've returned it.

I finally chose the D40 based on image quality, build quality & the excellent kit lens. Price wasn't a concern me, it is nice however to find something this truly amazing at the price I bought it at from beachcamera, shipping was lightening fast & excellent communications via e-mail. They even included a free 1 gig card.

*Disclaimer I'm in no way affiliated with (beachcamera.com) I'm just a customer who appreciates a great camera, a great deal & outstanding customer service.

There's no one more particular than I am, especially when it comes to imaging tools. If you're considering the D40 buy it, you won't be sorry. It's a great camera & I love mine. Thank you Nikon!
