I am a long time Pentax user. The istDS carries on the tradition of small, light, well laid-out cameras that has been a Pentax hallmark since the 1960s.
I use mine as a purely manual camera. I use older manual Pentax lenses and focus manually. I manually set my exposures as well. Because of this I do not have an opinion about many of the features other folks argue about. But I can tell you that I have some great images from this camera. Great color, great contrast.

Problems:
I really miss not having a split-image rangefinder in the viewfinder. But, as I said, I focus manually.
