After researching the D40, D80, K100D (which I also bought) and K10D for feature set to price point, the K10D came out on top. (Keep an eye out for rebates).
I won't repeat the praises that have already been made and I certainly agree with them 100%. The learning curve is moderate to high so READ the manual. You'll be surprised was you initially overlook.
The Sigma EX series lenses work great and they make a nice pair when attached but still the Pentax FA 77mm 1.8 limited is the best of my bunch, at least for now. The AF-540-FGZ is also a nice complement.
I initially took a beating from pro Nikon and Canon owners who later made much nicer comments about my choice.
I cannot wait for the Pentax SDM line of lenses to become available.
Problems:
The only issue I had was the ability to select an ISO value in certain modes without going through 4 menus steps but this was corrected with a firmware release.
Let's hope Pentax can offer an ISO50 option with another firmware release.
