My last camera was a Canon Powershot S45 which had amazing image quality (4MP on an 1/1.8" CCD), but needed an update because it was too large and heavy and so I never had it ready in my pocket when I needed it. Also it was slow and I got bored of the 35-100mm lens.

So after lots of reading in the internet I finally decided to give the R6 a try, even though it doesnt have full manual controls.

At first I made lots of test shots to compare it to the S45. And was very dissappointed. It still baffles me why my old S45 with only 4MP can make so much more beautiful and detailed images than a modern 7 megapixel camera. It's five years of technological advancement since then, isnt it?! Quite strange.

But well, to make it short:

I was truly dissappointed, even though in bright light the image quality of S45 and R6 are at least about the same. Which I consider to be quite good.

But after that I decided to finally take the R6 out and use it in every day life. And to my own surprise I suddenly found it to be a truly amazing little wonder.

The image quality might be mediocre: Excellent in bright light, but quite bad in low light (some noise even at ISO64, not "usable" above ISO400, hundreds of hot pixels at exposures longer then 1/4s).

Flash, lens aperture, image stabilization, automatic white balance and (sometimes) responsiveness might be only mediocre (but usable), too.

But what really got me in the end and turned everything upside down that was the lens.

With its 28-200mm and 2mm macro-mode - all build into this unbelievable small and light body - its just amazing! It gives you the freedom to shoot pictures like I have never done before. Especially since I always have it ready in my pocket!
I suddenly found myself climbing around my motives again, trying to hold the camera in truly awkward positions or running around in streets to discover the most interesting position and find the best framing possible. Really: Thats SO much more fun than just checking the image quality of every picture on your screen at home at 200% magnification all the time :) And the results are just amazing! Even if some of the pictures have hot pixels, a little noise or sometimes lack a little corner sharpness: After this experience I just dont care anymore. The R6 is the most fun, usefull and creative camera I have ever possesed. Yesterday - while I tried to get an awkward perspective shot from my house and held it out of a window as far as I could - it almost slipped out of my hand and smashed to bits 8 meters below. Would truly have been sad...

Problems:

See above. Also: Strange "haze" in one corner at long exposure shots (8s, beginning at ISO 400) with dark backgrounds.
