Coming from conventional SLR-photography for more than 30 years I started evaluating digital SLR early this year. It soon narrowed down to 400d or D40. Finally I bought the D40 due to the better feeling in my hands and better low-light performance. I have taken some thousand pictures since then, and I am very pleased with the output. Flashlight with the SB600 is superb. I use the 18-200 VR and do not change lenses, so dust is no problem to me. Also matrix-meterings is no problem, since I always use spotmetering and meter what I want. The same applies for the low number of AF-spots, I only use the center-spot and put the focus on what I want. And most important, this camera is fast and reliable.
Great value for money!
Problems:
1) no front wheel ( I knew that before, still it would be nice)
2) if you go fast, it would be nice to have dedicated buttons for ISO, drive, quality, WB and AF-mode.
3) no exposure-bracketing (even cheaper cameras have this)
4) automatic WB with artificial lighting is poor, you need to set custom WB.
5) after 15 month of extensive use all camera-settings like quality, size, WB, ISO and so on are locked and can not be changed anymore. Reset did not help. I installed the latest firmware, now it is working again.
