I bought the A570IS at the same time as my new 400D, as I wanted a camera that could do the things the SLR could not...
1\ Cheap, so that I could take it to events and not be too concerned about losing \ breaking it.
2\ Small, so that it could fit into a pocket or small bag, for the occasions where the SLR would be too big and annoying
3\ Take movies with sound at 30fps for as long as the memory lasts, something SLR can't do. Looking back at all of the movies I have taken with my 4 yeard Fuji, this was the only feature that the camera had to have.

I have to say that I am very impressed with the A570IS and have come away with some great pics. The "Programme" mode is great and allows the ease of point and shoot with the option to fiddle with the functions if need be. I am also glad it has a normal optical view finder, I quite often find my self reverting back to it instead of the screen. The face detection and IS both seem to work quite well.

Another factor for chosing this camera was the fact it uses AA batteries, as I already have a stack of rechargables and rechargers lying around. However the shared battery \ memory compartment is a bit fiddly and from what I have seen doesn't have any indication of which way around the batteries go. Which is kind of annoying when trying to do a quick battery change.

Problems:

* Shared battery \ memory compartment
* Photos can be noisey in low light
