I have used the e510, the uz740, the sp550, and now the e520. The construction felt a tad bit not as finely made as the e510, for which I loved the colors, although I had some problem before the firmware corrected most of the errors. The image quality was generally good in natural light, but when used in artificial light, it was off color...which I emailed Olympus about, but was told to use the custom white balance to off-set. Surely this is not the way to advise a customer. Therefore I am putting this review in dpreview, so that Olympus is aware how we take this seriously. I was also a bit put off when I owned the sp550uz, and it had all kinds of errors, especially focusing errors. Before we knew it, Olympus released a new model, but we are stuck with the sp550uz. With the e520, the white balance is the most problematic. Other wise in natural light, and with flash, the colors are good. The dynamic range was also a problem, since focusing was difficult..there was more hunting by the lens, when compared with the e510. There fore, I rate the camera lower than the e510, and hope that Olympus will come out with a firm ware to do two things; i) solve the off color due to the white balance, ii) improve the focusing in low light.
Problems:
Compared with canon 450D, nikon d60, Olympus e520 is good in colors, but lose out in low light performance. I wish I had retained my e510, which is a better camera than the e520, under the present state of white balance, and firmware.
Olympus has to seriously consider the feedback of its consumers, if it wishes to retain its customers. I am already looking to other models as alternative. I still like the colors of Olympus, but cannot wait anymore since other models have improved their features and color controls.
