I have it since November 29, 2008 bought in HongKong upgraded from a 30D (I had for 2,5
yrs) and have mainly a 24-105mm 4L attached to it.
Compared to the 30D the pictures do show better high-low details and color (this I add after 2 months usage) apart from sharpness of course.
The auto ISO is a big improvement when shooting in public area even at dark. It allows you to take fast a picture gaining the momentum without setting up camera first.
ISO till 3200 is perfectly usable and the auto ISO is a nice addition compared to the 30D. Above that it becomes of less use but all depends of course what you want to use the picture for.
New VGA screen works also well. Sometimes the automatic lighting adjusting might give you the idea that you have overexposured the picture, so it took me some time to get used to that. (you can switch it off or like what I do now, put my thumb on the sensor to see how the shot was in bright environment light).
Full frame gives me now the real 24mm of my lens. I was affraight of losing the long zoom end
on my 24-105mm compared to the crop of the 30D but don't find that a problem in real life.
Handling is also similar to 30D feels more solid even (except the CF door). It feels better balanced with the heavier lenses.
Nice to see so many reviews but sometimes they are just based on feelings and not on facts, there are better blogs if you are really interested. I have read many of those and was still uncertain to go for full frame.
Well I am glad I did, darkened corners or vignetting (a full frame disadvantage) and so are nicely
taken care of in body software and the amount of megapixels gives me in average a 7-10 Mb jpg's
so don't be afraid of that. Although shooting RAW gives more playground afterwards like distortion correction for your lens (sometimes needed to correct depending on subject) but also white balance correction afterwards !
Movie was not my main reason to buy this camera if the 5D MKII would have been without I would not have mind. But I have taken some shots and it's nice but you need to prepare upfront really to get a decent movie. Ultra-II Scandisk is to slow Extreme-III works well. All my computers Apple and PC's cannot play movie without hickups. So it's really pro stuff that comes out of the camera nice when you really want to catch something, for real film shots you need much preparation. Videolan software (when you correct the settings) will play the files well on a Core2Duo PC or MAC.
After two months of use I find myself shooting a small film more often, normally I took the filmcamera only for a special occasion of the kids, now I make small movies always when having the camera with me, and I get much pleasure out of that I have to admit.
But over all you will love this Photo camera ! I am glad I bought it for it was the improvement I was expecting to get so even if you buy your first xxD or so think twice and buy the 5D MKII (easy talking for I found the 5D at that time also too expensive). I am just glad/lucky bastard I could do it now.
Problems:
The CF door queeks when you press your hand to hold the camera tightly, it sounds cheap, I guess the sealing of the door. After a tip on this site (check discussion forum Canon EOS 1D-1DS-5D you will find really usefull tips and remarks there) I put some isolation tape on the rim inside the door !, others suffered too of this issue (not all!)
