I never liked P&S and small sensor compacts, because of noise on high ISO, lack of manual controls and poor build quality.
When first saw G10, I loved the shape, the excellent LCD and those metal top controls, especially the exposure compensation knob. Even the sensor size is larger than tiny ones used in most compacts.
After a month using it, I still love it though I'm not going to ditch my Nikon dSLR and Nikkors in favorite of G10. However G10 fits in a coat pocket, something I cannot say for my Nikon. Also is self contained, with a quiet fast lens, a passable flash, a wonderful 3" LCD and great features including RAW.
I admit that sometimes I wish it had a bit larger sensor maybe a faster f2.0 lens too. Last week I had a chance to use the much praised Panasonic LX3 comparing it with G10. Yes, it's faster in low light due to its f2.0 lens, but despite what dp review says I did't find it less noisy than G10 on same ISO and RAW. Build-quality wise I can say that LX3 doesn't compare to G10, it looks cheap and hate its "plastic" feel.
Problems:
1. Noisy on high ISO (>200) but not worst that other small sensor compacts, even the great LX3
2. Zoom focal length not displayed on LCD
3. A bit slow lens (f2.8)
4. Primitive OVF though better than an non existed one!
5. Weak flash
