Early Last Year my FZ20 broke (4 years and 90.000 shots). Even if I had bought a Dslr (40D) I needed a new UZ to use when I can't carry my EOS system and optics with me.
Had to decide between FZ50 and FZ28 (I already know there is no competition in the UZ market for other brands).
The newer technology, and 27 WA of the FZ28 made me choose it, although I would miss the better build qty of the 50, tilting LCD and F11 + Flash hot shoe for macros.
As for all the FZ Lumix, a great Lens !!! Point.
Very few CA, never too soft optically.
There is some softness owing to aggressive NR (even setting it at -2) but once you evaluate the pic at 50% its size , it's OK !
It was like that also for the old 5Mp FZ50, surely more noisy but with great detail.
I wish FZ28 was more on the noisy side too, but preserving more details...
Anyway also RAW showst that there is not much to gain when 10MP images come out of such small CCDs...
GREAT LCD! Contrasty and nice colors, definitively better than the one on my EOS 40D !!!
Image colors are good (I set contrast to -2 and saturation to -1, then Sharpness 0 and NR to -2).
Auto WB is probably not great (often a bit warm) but I tune the K -wb and it goes perfectly.
Even in this case, when I use Kelvin WB on FZ28 and on EOS 40D (Neutral Pict Style) I find the FZ28 WB and colors, to be slightly more precise, I mean perfect reds, greens, yellows and blues, whereas the 40D, although superior in IQ, has slightly more off tones for each color !!
AF is sensibly slower than the one on my old FZ20 (but it was only a 12x and of the superior level of FZ 10-50 build qty).
Overall a jem of a camera...
Although it is still hard to tell, whether and how much is the gain in final TRUE resolution, between such a cam and the old, noisier 5Mp FZ20 and FZ5 !!!
Noise is never a problem , at low ISo, but even ISO 100 has some trace of NR when you check pics at 100%.
With low contrast, Ifound a strangely Wide Dynamic Range, as if the cam applied some "intelligent iso" or the like to expand DR: there is some noise in shadows and it seems that the cam has gained detail in shadows, in a way similar to applying Intelligent Exposure...
Overall I m satisfied, although I wished it was still a 6-7MP camera!
PS Great videos.
Problems:
Still too much NR, even at -2 !
Wished images were noisier but with less fine details fu--ed up by strong NR.
Anyway this is a very nice camera, although in some way it doesn't feel such a pro-like one as it was with the FZ20-50 series...
