I had previously bought a DMC-LZ8 for making record shots of projects where I
didn't want my SLR to get dirty or damaged. It is very inexpensive but surprised the
heck out of me with its bright, clean, images that are not overprocessed in the
camera.

On the strength of this I bought my wife the DMC-TZ5. Big hit! The viewfinder is
huge, bright, and has 430K pixels. She doesn't even miss the optical finder.

The list of features is too long to go into here, but this is a very well thought-out
product, which produces extremely clean images even for a newbie user.
The Leica optics are superb. 10x optical zoom with optical image stabilization really
is useful.

Construction is solid (metal body). Video clips are clean and sharp.

If they introduced a RAW option, I might even retire my SLR.

Problems:

Like most LCD viewfinders, its viewfinder is useless in bright sunlight.

First impression is that it uses up the rechargeable battery rather quickly.
