A good, solid camera, loosing the battle to the new generation (D90). The ergonomics is excellent, though I'd prefer a thinner body. The image quality is great in 2-years old standards, but these days it looks quite noisy. ISO 1600 are very noisy. However the main issue with D80 is the unreliable matrix exposure metering. Lot's been said about it, but the bottom line is that once shot one should always review the histogram, dial exposure compensation, shoot again, check the histogram again, and so on. Frequently it takes 3-4 attempts until the right exposure is achieved. Significantly hurts usability. Using spot/center metering takes me 15 years back. The issue is resolved in D90.
My D80 from the first production line was repaired twice in the first 3 months including replacement of the matrix.
Problems:
- Noisy ISO 1600
- Extremely unreliable matrix metering
- A bit bulky
- No dust shake
