I am definitely not prone to buying the latest and greatest. But when I saw the feature set of the G11 (including the hinged screen) I knew it was time to replace my beloved (but slow and only 4 mp) G3 that I have had for the past 6 years. The swivel screen is FANTASTIC! Don't kid yourself, it enables you to get much more interesting angles without having to kneel ( important when taking shots of little kids where you don't want to be "looking down" for the shot. The hinged screen is also TREMENDOUS for macro shots. In fact, macro is pure joy with the G11 vs. the care required for taking good macro shots with a DSLR.
The other alternative is the S90 which anyone considering the G11 should look at given its smaller size. But I use an external flash, and like the "old fashioned" dials that are festooned on the G11 body that make it SO EASY to have quick control of the camera. How many P&S use a dial to change ISO? Not many anymore.
Such a pleasure to use. In fact, it is so capable that I have to remind myself on outings sometimes that it is worth the extra hassle in certain circumstances to take my DSLR gear, not the G11 along.
Problems:
Not problems, just a wish list but hey, what do you want from a $500 point and shoot anyway?
1) Always room to improve the AF speed
2) Too easy to accidentally activate buttons on the back of the camera
3) While I can understand the size advantages of SD cards, I would have liked to have been able to use my CF cards from my DSLR (the G3 uses CF).
That's it! I DO NOT look for video capabilities in a P&S - I am just a humble photographer. Looking forward to going on my upcoming ski vacation with my tidy little package of G11, charger, memory cards and USB cable all tucked in a small Lowe bag that fits in my carry on!
