As many others have said, the S90 complements an SLR. Its features and IQ slots
between P&S and SLRs. Under certain lighting conditions outdoors and always with
macro shots, the S90's IQ is on par with my XSi, but most of the time, DOF is far
less and noise is much greater in the S90. To combat the noise and sharpen my
images, most of my pics are taken in RAW and post-processed in DPP so that I can
achieve the best possible results. The only time I use jpeg is when taking product
shots when I sell items on ebay.
As I noted, the area where it really excels is in macro photography. These types of
shots are always tack sharp, and DOF is present in great degree (provided your
background is further away). I've never had an issue with macros.
Overall, I am quite pleased with the S90 as a high-quality portable cam. If I really
want knockout shots, I still take my XSi though.
Problems:
Batteries do not last long. Once the low battery indicator lights, you'd better run
and get your spare.
It could use a small grip under the shutter button. My makeshift solution was to
tape a sliver of rubber there using 3M's friction tape which is cloth-based.
The cover of the flash head is a little creaky.
Price should be in the low 300s to be of good value.
