I find this lens gives excellent results, I haven't used a zoom in years preferring prime lenses and I was sceptical at first. This was my first digital lens and it was purchased alongside a Sony A700. After a few years of use I see little to complain about.
Yes the construction is a lttle plasticky but I wasn't charged for the engineering needed for a pro-spec lens.
It is razor sharp at all but the most extreme apertures. My one gripe is the vignetting at the widest settings.
Yes I did recommend it to a friend who was very pleased that I did. Think of it as a high quality travel lens, capable of most gereral scenarios and it should live up to expectations. I consider it good value for money
