Very Useful Lens

This is a suprisingly useful lens. As a prime lens it is very sharp at its 300mm focal length, unlike most zooms that soften at the long end. It has adequate image stabilization to hand carry in good light, making it ideal for birding at closer ranges with a decent keeper percentage. A tripod adds a further margin of sharpness. The built-in lens hood extends and tightens with a slight twist, working perfectly.

Although not quite a true macro, at its minimum focus of about five feet it can nail butterflies, dragonflies, and small critters with extremely high detail. It als does a fine job with wildflowers. The background blur on close-ups is outstanding due to the 300mm focal length. The depth of field, however, is also fairly tight due to the 300mm focal length. You may need F/8 or more at times and may have to pump up the ISO for shutter speed.

Finally, with a better quality neck strap (Crumpler or similar), the lens/camera combination is not a neck-breaker. In sum, this a great lens for a hike through the fields and woods, for whatever you encounter.

An easy Five Star pick!
