Sony RX1 Focus

I'm having difficulty focusing my RX1. It's not the speed, it's the actual focus. The entire scene is out of focus, sometimes; it takes many tries to get sharp focus. It's not the macro ring. I use AF and DMF, I use single point and flexible point, all result in soft focus. Is it me or is it the camera? I don't have this problem with any other camera I own, including the RX100 or the NEX7.

Were I to take the RX1 into Sony for an overhaul, I'm sure it would focus properly without fail. This is very frustrating. Am I the only one?

I don't have RX1, but, from what I have read here, you are not alone, however, it seems only to be a problem in certain shooting situations.

Perhaps you can clarify for yourself when it does well, and when not, then try to determine if your individual camera is faulty.

Good luck, Elliott

You'll need to be specific about the issue if you want real feedback. Is the camera unable to focus in all conditions? Are you trying to focus on something with strong contrast or a white wall? Are you indoor or or out. Perhaps you can post a photo.

If it was me, my first step would be to read the manual perhaps you've missed something basic and fundamental.

My experience is the rx1 focuses as well as the nex7 +zeiss lens.

Part of the problem is randomness. Sometimes focus is fine, sometimes not. Sometimes the focus is sharp, sometimes soft, sometimes outright blurry everywhere. Believe me, I've read the manual. It's not due to leaving the lens in macro setting. I use AF and DMF, and single and flexible points. I just took some test photos that were totally blurred, and I made several attempts to get good focus. And I'm not referring to back or front focus - an issue that has been mentioned before. In most instances the entire photo is blurred (and in some instances, only parts are blurred). The randomness of the problem is difficult because it's hard to explain. I may have to send it into the factory for a total overhaul.

If most of your shots are not in focus you may have a problem. Just for kicks I just took 10 random pics of stuff around apt at f2 using flex spot and all are tac sharp. I've taken 1000s of shots and only a few oof shots. good luck.

this was reported by one purchaser on another forum (and i think he popped in here to rebut someone who implied that all reported problems with focusing rest with the user). sony exchanged his rx1 for another rx1. no problem with the new camera. given the problems you're reporting, you should probably consider the possibility that the one you have is flawed. if it isn't, sony will let you know.

Agreed... I would consider returning. I have nearly no (out of ) focus issues in nearly all situations. There also have been varied reports if you depress the release shutter quickly without a focus pause half way down... from the entire picture being out of focus to the picture not taken for several fractions of a second or more while the camera tries to focus.

I kept thinking: How can a machine act randomly? Well, I reset the camera - that didn't work. Then I looked at that macro setting for the umpteenth time - voila! It was set on macro. How could I have overlooked that? Talk about being red-faced...call me stupid, call me a moron, call me anything. I changed the setting from macro to infinity and suddenly all of my RX1 photos were tack sharp.

OK, so it was totally my fault - sorry! I'm really happy my camera is working as it should. Sorry for the false alarm.

I got my RX1 3 days ago and havent had any focusing issues even in lower light. My only issue is forgeting to turn the ring back after a macro shot - or forgeting to switch to af after using mf -- lmao! Love the camera so far.

Was it all the way on macro or slightly off infinity?

Somehow I feel that if this camera didn't have the macro ring there would be very few complaints on the AF lol. glad you got it resolved. Enjoy the wonderful camera.

I can relate. You learn to sense it pretty quick; if the focus is simply not hitting and you're thinking The focus can't be this bad... it's usually not. :)

It was on macro, not between the two settings. Personally, I wish Sony had labelled the settings "Macro' and 'Regular' to avoid confusion.

I have had my RX1 for nearly one week. For the first several days, I was having the same problem, but now I can instantly tell when the Macro ring is on the wrong setting.
